John's Profile

A law graduate and Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, I’ve advised hundreds of clients in the private and public sectors during my 30+ years in health and risk management.

I have worked with executive boards and investors, government departments, HR directors, compensation and benefits managers, insurance and risk managers, health and safety specialists, occupational health professionals, employee benefits consultants, lawyers, accountants, management consultants, insurers, hospitals and a wide range of treatment providers.

As I believe that everyone should have the opportunity of understanding and managing their brain health, I enjoyed supporting the team at Creyos in developing their presence in the online cognitive assessment market.  This included introducing $2.1m revenue opportunities and running trial pilots for 119 organisations.  Won new accounts in Primary Care; Occupational Health; Case Management; Health Assessment; Memory Centre; Executive Health Coaching; Fatigue Management; Audiology. Also secured the appointment to Transport for London’s project on cognitive performance in the work place.

Earlier I established a joint venture with Cambridge Cognition to build a global footprint in the workplace arena. I secured new revenues and high- profile client wins with the legacy product and resource made available to me.

With the greater awareness of the importance of good cognitive health in the ageing workforce I was part of the health management team that brought about DWP’s Fuller Working Lives programme.

I was invited to advise the Government task force on workplace mental health culminating in Thriving at Work : the Stevenson/Farmer review of mental health and employers.

As consulting Managing Director to HealthScreen UK, (now Check4Cancer) I grew this unique cancer screening business so that it now offers its services to hundreds of thousands of employees.

In addition:
• I won and managed the largest ever corporate screening campaigns for HP. This work was recognised in them winning the employee benefits award 2013 for ‘Best Healthcare and Wellbeing Benefits’
• Launched new services to the corporate market and won clients including Siemens, BNY Mellon, Deloitte, Mercer, Thomson Reuters, Bright Horizons, Xerox/Buck
• Grew revenues exponentially

I advised the Board at Alliance Surgical on setting up their new corporate healthcare proposition.

David Mobbs, CEO at Nuffield Health and his strategic board engaged me for an in- depth review of corporate strategy and proposition development. I also advised on Nuffield Health’s health and wellbeing strategy for its own employees.

Both the DWP and their advisers at Capgemini asked for my input on the effectiveness of employee health measurement tools.

The Group Head of Health at British Gas engaged me to help deliver their Well Flourishing People Programme for senior managers.

I was Director of Private Sector Stakeholder Engagement for the East Midlands Public Health Authority’s new Platform for Health and Wellbeing’ securing the commitment of 15 founding employers, exceeding the original brief.

In each of my assignments, I use my experience and knowledge to make a positive, measurable difference.

Before setting up Shandwell, I was CEO of Medisure, a Third Party healthcare administrator. I managed the business through cultural and strategic change, gaining IiP accreditation at first application with the assessor reporting ‘It is quite remarkable how the CEO has changed the culture of the company since his appointment.’ I strongly believe that organisational culture has an important part to play in any health and wellbeing strategy.

At Medisure, we introduced new concepts in employee healthcare including musculoskeletal and mental health treatment networks. Clients enjoyed independently audited service levels 13% higher than the market average. They included Honda, Sky, Centrica, Unisys, Surrey Police and London Underground.

I also won the appointment to Vitality Health in a major project to help them them launch successfully in the UK.

At Marsh, I was Senior Vice President and held a number of key roles across the business, developing strategic partnerships and working with a wide range of clients, all with different risk profiles. I built up an in- depth knowledge of the full spectrum of employee related risk.
